Multiplayer Games -- An All-Points Bulletin

Well, I was originally going to do a post on I Hraet You, but I’ll push that one back a few days.  Right now, I’m in what could be generously described as a state of emergency.

I’ve made it no secret that I don’t particularly care for Call of Duty, least of all its bloppiest iteration yet.  And I’m all right with that; as long as I could put some distance between myself and the game, I would have figured we’d both be better off.  Problem is, lately I haven’t been able to put some distance between us; my gaming buddies are eager to pop in the disc every time, and with it being a two-to-one vote, I end up suffering through having a few rounds.  The only thing that can save me from the game is offering up another, better game to play -- and as of late that’s been getting tougher and tougher.

So that’s where you come in, readers.  I’m putting out another all-points bulletin; recommend me some good (local) multiplayer games that I can pick up, in the hopes of diverting their attention and saving me from some serious headaches.  That way, the next time I trot on over to GameStop I can maybe grab an old game or two that’ll give us hours of fun (and dissuade more trade-ins).  Right now my preference is for PS3 games, so that we can exchange the PlayStation All-Stars => CoDBlops2 cycle with an All-Stars => Significantly Cooler Game cycle.  But I’m not opposed to hearing some Wii or 360 games being named.  (Doubly so for the Wii, in case there are some GameCube gems.)

Got a recommendation?  Then let me hear it in the comments.  Keep me from meeting with a horrible fate.

Hmmm.  I think I need to do a post on multiplayer games one of these days.

  1. If you have a PC, I'd totally be down for Marvel Heroes on June 4th when it comes out. It's free to play. Looks like a cross between Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Diablo. Hey, there's a good multiplayer game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. It can be mind numbing but you get to smash the hell out of Marvel baddies.

  2. Double Dragon Neon is a blast. But I might be a bit jaded considering I grew up with the original. *shakes old man cane*

  3. Oh yeah, I remember the Ultimate Alliance games. Played those quite a bit a while back...which reminds me, I've still got X-Men Legends laying around. I might have to pop one of those in one day.

  4. I'm gonna cruise into the sunset
Don't ever need to hit the brakes!
On the horizon, whole world's open wiiiiiiiiiiiide!

A blast, indeed -- and that soundtrack....Mmmm-MMM! Delicious. Maybe that one's worth a shot. There are punks that need to taste some fists of fury, I'd wager.

  5. So, no sports games ? I mean, FIFA and PES are quite good and there's also the NBA2K series which is great.

Otherwise, I haven't played it (I don't have an Xbox but it's soon (now ?) will be available on PC), but some friends that I trust told me that Trial Evolutions is wonderfully awesome.

Left for Dead 2 is really nice to play as a team, but I don't know how it is in local multiplayer with a Xbox.

But personally, I haven't found anything better than Super Bomberman 5 on SNES (if not the 5, go for the 3 or the 2).

  6. Sports games, huh? Hmmm. You know, I don't think I've actually grabbed one of those since...well, ever. To be fair, I DID have the Wii version of NBA Jam (which was awesome), but alas, dear old big bro decided to trade it in on a whim. Like an idiot. Now he has to play more Mario Party whenever the Wii's hooked up.

But back on topic, I might have to give sports games some closer consideration. It'll probably be the closest I'll ever get to performing well in a contest of physical prowess. There are some scars from my Little League season that'll never heal...

  7. If you're looking for more modern stuff, both Borderlands games, L4D games, Portal 2, Halo and Gears of War all have couch co-op options. If you want some cheaper stuff, the first two Army of Two games kinda suck but suck in a good B-movie way if you're playing locally with someone (the same goes for Kane & Lynch). Since you prefer PS3, there are also some classics that are good fun like the dungeon crawler Sacred 2, Dungeon Siege 3 & Dark Legends. Any of the LEGO games are couch co-op as well.

  8. Neon definitely favors the co-op as the solo play is punishingly hard unless you're a pro at dodging.

  9. The LEGO games, huh? Hmmm. Might have to give those a look. I've never given them a shot before (outside of a demo or two), but maybe it's time to change that.
