Then again, "Form Destroyer" is the perfect phrase for any round of witty banter.

At any rate, it's confession time: you've long since eclipsed me when it comes to this game. I started up a co-op playthrough with my brother, but his patience wore thin and he can't even be bothered to boot up the game. The pace was just too high a wall for him; in one instance we wrapped up for the day and he said -- and I quote -- "We haven't accomplished anything. God damn it." I guess I'll have to finish the game on my own, but who knows when that'll happen?

In any case, glad you had your fun with the game. I don't know what went on behind the scenes -- if Xillia 2 was a borderline cash-grab -- but the team managed to make it work for the most part. It's a hard game to hate, all things considered...except I'm go ahead and hate it, because the pressure's on to at least try to finish it before Tales of Zestiria comes out.

And now Tales of Berseria is happening -- with what's apparently a dedicated female protagonist. I feel like people should be making more noise about that, given the state of the games industry and the LACK of female leads, but I guess people would rather whine again about how FF15 has a boyband as the main party...even when there's a perfectly good alternative sitting, like, right there.

...If others won't say it, I will. TALES IS BEASTIN' ALL OVER ERRRBODY.Voltech44noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6904713839696769313.post-68123487254208284952015-06-11T17:31:59.078-07:002015-06-11T17:31:59.078-07:00I know this post is old, but I just got this game ...I know this post is old, but I just got this game the other day and I... have been doing nothing else but play it. Holy crap on a stick THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE FIRST GAME LIKE OMFGTHISGAMEIS-

*coughs* ...Pardon me.

The debt mechanic is ok I guess. On the one hand, I enjoyed it at first because I kept up with side quests and earning the right badges in the job system. But as the game progressed, I was so into the story that I wanted to burn my debt and the job system to the ground so I could see what happens next. I'm near the very end of the game (like, I could get the bad ending soon if I mess up in an hour or two) and I feel annoyed that I have to delay the final stretch just to finish paying off the $16.5 million still sitting above my head. I've been so tempted to find cheats just to get the whole thing over with. That would defeat the point, surely, but a gamer can dream. I'm still not happy with it, but it's nowhere close to a game breaker, unlike Nova and her peppiness. (My Ludger snapped at her a few times to shut her up...)

While the returning characters don't have plot significance as before, I liked how the reused aspects were handled. Xillia 1 spent so much time building the world, the characters, the plot, and the rushed ending that it was sometimes dizzying. Now that I know the world well enough, this game feel more straightforward and less exposition-heavy. The "what if" scenarios that appear are pretty fun too, which helped add more to characters that hardly had development in the first game.

And the XIII and XIII-2 connection wasn't lost on me. I mean, damn. No need to give that trilogy a try because the Tales of Xillia duology has bitch-slapped and drop-kicked Squeenix without batting an eye. It's still creepy how the two series of installments are similar, but I'm thrilled I picked the less pretentious and more lighthearted of the two.

This game is so fun, I'll more than likely do a New Game+. I could use grade points to earn glad faster to plow through the debt to get a better ending. And Ludger will have more of a voice, which makes me happy. He's one of the few silent protags who I think would have been far better with a voice.Melanie Lighthttp://melanie-light.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6904713839696769313.post-60399790040999166132014-10-01T22:11:42.462-07:002014-10-01T22:11:42.462-07:00I could ask you the same question, you know. Warms my heart, it does.

Anyway, I'm doing all right -- still posting here, obviously. I've been pushing some outside writing endeavors recently, so I'm hoping that goes well. I'd rather keep quiet about it for now until I know how it'll go, but just the fact that I've got something out there has me pretty satisfied.

And I suspect that sense of satisfaction will be replaced by crippling nervousness as the weeks wear on. But oh well. Nothing a few video games can't remedy -- or alternatively, decay into oblivion by virtue of neural degradation.

Man, I type some weird things sometimes.Voltech44noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6904713839696769313.post-72301890355919794982014-10-01T07:14:34.991-07:002014-10-01T07:14:34.991-07:00~oh man i love reading yr long posts haha! That game is no laughing matter -- merely a whirling abyss of non-merit that eradicates all light and hope that even draws near its gaping, nebulous maw.

I don't have any problems believing that you died, though. Abysses can do that.

In any case, I can tell you right now that I'm definitely at an early point. Or early-ish; there's no telling how far I actually am in the story right now. I'd be farther along by now, but I'm doing a co-op run with my brother -- and for weeks he held Xillia 2 ransom in exchange for playing Street Fighter with him (for many hours at a time, as is the standard). Couple that with the fact that he dragged his way through -- and now currently hates -- Destiny, and it's no wonder we haven't gotten too far.

Still, you're not wrong for thinking Xillia 2's uninteresting. I haven't written it off yet, but I have to admit that something's been lost going from the first game to the second. There's something strangely cynical about it, in-universe and out of it. It almost feels like the "adventure" this time around is routine instead of natural -- something that strips away some of the wonder -- and while I'm hoping for the best with the Ludger/Elle relationship, I'm getting some bad vibes. Will they be enough? Will the story at large be enough?

I guess the question that needs to be answered by the game -- LONG before the credits roll -- is simple: "Is this a game that needed to exist?" I think the proof is there, but the fact that I have to even throw it out there can't be the best sign.

I'm hoping for the best, though. I gotta believe.Voltech44noreply@blogger.com
